Norma Lorraine Jankowski, age 93 of Griggsville, IL passed away Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield, IL. She was born in Nashville, IL on December 24, 1929, to Fredrick and Bertha Struckmeyer Nagel. Norma married Bernard Carl Jankowski, Sr. on May 7, 1955, in Corinth, MS and he preceded her in death June 1, 2013.
Norma grew up in Nashville, IL and attended the Lutheran School, graduating in 1948. She met her husband while he was playing baseball at the field her father owned where he hosted local St. Louis area minor league teams. She worked in St. Louis as a switchboard operator during the war and also worked as a secretary. Norma and her husband moved to Pike County in 1958 when he transferred with the State Police, and this is where they raised their family. Norma’s main job was raising her family, but she also sold Avon for many years, worked as a Pike County EMT and was a cook at Griggsville School. She was a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and Pike County HCE. Norma loved mystery movies and watching Hallmark movies, especially Christmas in July. She enjoyed spending time doing crossword puzzles, crocheting and knitting and remained active and social in her later years always enjoying dinner and wine with friends.
Norma is survived by children, Leslie (Jerry) VanStrien of Perry, MO, Lee Edward Jankowski of Griggsville, IL, Robert (Maria) Jankowski of Clearwater, FL and Bernard (Kris) Jankowski, Jr. of Candia, NH; nine grandchildren, Victoria, Emily, Aaron, Juliette, Haydn, Helena, Sean, Mariajose and Rodrigo; and three great grandchildren, Abram, Eliza and Lyle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fredrick and Bertha Nagel; husband of 58 years, Bernard Jankowski; and siblings, Harold Nagel, Edmund Nagel, Helen Rhodes, Dorothy Sturman and Wallace Nagel.
Cremation rites have been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 27, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pittsfield, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or Bethel Cemetery. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com.
